What do you love most about your business?
Although running a family business has its ups and downs; the education you give to younger generations are priceless. They have a view point not many people don’t get to see; and I believe they get an education in areas like HR, Culture, Leadership and what it takes to run a family business. This gives them fantastic life lessons they take on in their professional careers – whether that is in the family business or not.
What is something you wished you knew starting out?
I wish I had known FBA existed and that there had been other family businesses and consultants that could support and assist; with the family aspect of our business.
What have you found to be the biggest hurdle to female leadership?
I think you have to work harder to prove yourself as a female leader and there are a lot of misconceptions. As the first and only CEO in the steel distribution industry, I have seen this firsthand. But I believe some of these barriers are starting to come down and women are getting more opportunities; which they so rightfully deserve.
What do you think are the top 3 habits to successful leadership?
These are game changers for me; using your guts instincts, taking the time to ask questions and really listening to the answers and finally using your emotional intelligence. I wouldn’t be where I am without these three skills and I use them all the time to continuously build me skills in leadership.
What is the best advice you have received in business that has supported your success?
I was once told, “You can only control you,” this really resonated with me. It helps me think clearer about my actions and how I move forward in dealing with problems. I can never control anyone else’s decisions or action but I can most certainly control mine.
What advice you would give to the next generation of female leaders?
Take time to build your type of leadership. We are all different and have strengths and areas to work unique to us; so don’t rush it. Overtime you become the best type of leader that works for you.
